Terrell Animal Adoption Center

2601 Hwy. 80 East
Terrell 75160
972-551-6641 (Adoption Center)
Our shelter focuses on getting as many animals out of the shelter
as is possible. We are not a “no kill” facility; however,
our daily goal is to limit as much as possible the number of animals
we must euthanize in our facility.
Rescue, Adoption and Owner Recovery is the foundational principal
that drives toward our goal. In keeping with that goal, we are changing
shelter use and hours of operation, beginning December 1, 2012.

Office Hours:
Beginning December 1, the shelter will be open seven days a week.
Unless an employee needs to take off on the weekend, the shelter will
be open. However, on weekend days we will only respond to emergency animal
control calls in the city.
Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be devoted to Rescue, Adoption
and Owner Recovery and networking efforts, as well as cleaning and caring
for the animals. On Sunday, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., we will clean the shelter,
caring for the animals and perform important administrative work necessary
to our efforts to save animals.
Monday - Friday we will respond to field response calls
for service from 6 a.m. to
7 p.m. The shelter will open to the public at 10 a.m. to allow us to clean
and care for the animals before receiving the public.
After hours call the Police Department at 972-551-6622
in the case of an animal emergency, such as a severely wounded animal
or vicious animal incident.
Animal Adoption
You can view information and
pictures of the puppies, dogs, kittens, and cats temporarily living
at the Terrell Animal Shelter and available for adoption.
They are all wishing for new homes!
We
strive to keep the number of animals we have to euthanize as low as we
possibly can in a city environment. Although we are not a “no kill”
facility, this goal is paramount to what we do here. The Terrell Animal
Adoption Center works to unite owners with their lost pets and to promote
animal adoption and rescue of healthy, unclaimed, unwanted, stray and
abandoned pets within the city limits of the City of Terrell.
The City of Terrell does not pick up or house animals from outside the
city limits. However, you are not required to be a Terrell resident to
adopt or reclaim an animal from the shelter.
Leash Law

It shall be unlawful
for the owner or harborer of any dog or cat to permit such dog or cat
to run at large within the city limits. (Sec. 3-11)
Vaccination

All dogs and cats 4 months of age and older must be vaccinated for rabies
annually by a licensed veterinarian.
Dog/Cat License

Terrell City residents are required to purchase a license for their dogs
and cats for a fee of $7.00. The license is valid for one year.
Reclaiming a Pet

Persons reclaiming a lost pet will be charged a boarding fee of $10.00
per day and must show proof of a current rabies vaccination. Terrell
City residents are also required to purchase a license for $7.00.
Stray animals are held a minimum of five days. Animals wearing ID tags
are held for ten days.
Animal Adoption

You will pay a single fee to cover all legally required adoption fees
for an animal adopted from our shelter. The single fee means more convenience
for our adopting families. You simply sign the Adoption Agreement and
pay a fee of $60 to the City of Terrell, IF the animal is not already
spayed/neutered and vaccinated against rabies.
We will immediately schedule your animal for pre-paid spay/neuter/vaccination
services with the City’s veterinarian. The animal will then be dropped
off for the vet services and picked up afterward. When you pick up your
new pet, the single fee pays for the veterinary services, as well as City
of Terrell Registration for city residents.
If you wish to pay an additional $15 fee, we will microchip the animal
for you while you wait. Microchipping is optional at our shelter, but
it is highly recommended as an aid to identifying your pet if it is lost.
Low-cost spay/neuter and other vet services for currently owned animals
is also available from our friends at Kaufman County Animal Awareness
Project. Contact them at info@neuternet.org.
Animals available for adoption may be visited at the shelter, 2601 Highway
80 East in the City of Terrell at the following times:
Monday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Tuesday – Friday: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Saturday: 7 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Getting animals adopted is our ultimate goal and we will work with you
to get that done. We do accept returned animals after adoption, but no
fees will be returned. Additionally, the ASPCA may be contacted regarding
the transfer of an animal, if preferred.

are being adopted on a continuous basis.

Volunteer at the Animal Adoption Center
We love our Animal Control Volunteers and could not be successful without
their valuable, meaningful help at the shelter.
We have several opportunities available for volunteers at the shelter.
Anyone should be able to find a place to pitch in and contribute.
Prospective volunteers will be asked to fill out a brief questionnaire
for a minimal background and driver’s license check. Our volunteers
must have a good driving record in order to help us transport animals
or operate city equipment.
We have a number of volunteer tasks available, including:
