Ask The Mayor

Q. - When will the streets in Terrell be repaved?
Specifically - Griffith was topped with a "temporary"
layer of tar and gravel. This was about 2 or 3 years ago.
When will this be moved from temporary to permanent?
Answer - The Griffith situation is not a simple one.
There is no question that it is a street in need of some major work.
There are two complicating factors. The first is that the water and
waste water lines under Griffith are very old and must be replaced before
the street is completely overhauled. The second is that, as the City
has built up, the drainage paths have become inadequate. Adequate drainage
is necessary for a road to be durable, particularly with our difficult
soil conditions.
As you mentioned, we did a project on Griffith that included some leveling
and surface treatment. Our intention was to stabilize the street for
3-5 years until we can get into a position to fund major reconstruction
(including the drainage and utility work).
With economic conditions such as they are, the Council does not see
a way to fund such a large project. It seems unlikely that the economy
will allow us to provide this in next year's budget. My hope is that
we will be able to fund it in the year after that.
We know that there are several major streets in town that need significant
work. We just have to ask citizens to wait with us until we can come
up with the resources required to do the work.
Sincerely,
Hal Richards, Mayor
