Q. - It is an understatement
to say that there is an overwhelming number of illegal immigrants residing
in the City of Terrell. I would like to know if the city has addressed
the subject of taking a stand like Grand Prairie and Irving have done.
If not, how are such ordinances initiated?
Thank you.
Answer - While we don't know what the numbers might
be, I am sure you are right that we have a significant number of illegal
immigrants living in the
City.
We have not formally discussed doing what is being done in Irving.
What they are doing, as I understand it, is this: When the police make
an arrest they try to verify that the person has legal status. If they
can not verify legal status, then they notify immigration and customs.
It is a fact of life that police have to be very careful to avoid racial
profiling, but I see the Irving approach as one of common sense.
Thanks for the input. Your question will result in this issue being
discussed by the Council and Staff.
Sincerely,
Hal Richards
Mayor
