Q. - I too am
concerned about the growing number of illegal immigrants in and around
our City and encourage the Council's discussion on this issue, which
I consider of great importance to not only the citizens of Terrell,
but each and every American citizen.
Thank you and I look forward to
your reponse.
Answer - As I said in an earlier response, our police
officers generally verify status of anyone when making an arrest. If
the person is suspected to be illegal, the immigration officials are
notified.
However, I think the best policy for all concerned is for the Federal
Government to enforce immigration laws and get control of our borders.
I think that the Feds have heard the message loud and clear and they
now understand that this is perhaps the number one issue in the minds
of Americans.
Generally, cities do not have the resources or legal status to take
over the immigration function and shouldn't have to do so. We will
get the issue on an upcoming Council agenda and discuss how we should
respond to this concern.
Sincerely,
Hal Richards
