I am curious to know why just about every street in Terrell is completely torn up. The only street that is nice, of course, is newly paved Virginia street. Are there plans to repave any streets in town?

Q. – I am curious to know why just about every street in Terrell is completely torn up. The only street that is nice, of course, is newly paved Virginia street. Are there plans to repave any streets in town? I’ve been here for almost 2 years and have seen nothing done at all.

Answer – Thanks for your inquiry.

First, I don’t think that anyone is satisfied with the condition of many of our streets and it has been the subject of much discussion at City Hall.

Some background. During the years of the recession we made the decision to cut spending and live with the reduced revenue. Many cities increased tax rates to make up for the decline in property taxes. We believed that was not the thing to do in a terrible economy. Street maintenance spending was significantly reduced.

Then comes the weather. The lack of street maintenance combined with a record breaking drought followed by record rainfall wreaked havoc on our streets and produced a lot of the deterioration you see.

We significantly increased our street maintenance budget for this year. There will be a lot of work done once we get the weather (warm and dry). Our property tax values are increasing by new development and all of the restoration going on all over town. Increased revenue will increase our ability to better fund street maintenance. It is going to take some time, but our streets will be in good condition.

Sincerely,

Hal Richards, Mayor
