Federal SAFER grant provides funding for hiring additional firefighters

TERRELL – Grant Terrell City Council unanimously approved a resolution during their Jan. 22 meeting approving a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant from the Department of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The $1,069,715 grant will be utilized by the Terrell Fire Department to hire additional fire personnel. Funds will enable the department to ensure they have adequate resources to respond and safely perform at incidents, providing protection from fire and fire-related hazards.
“I am extremely happy with the Council’s decision to approve Resolution 915. The approval of this resolution will allow us to implement the SAFER grant and hire nine additional firefighters. This addition to our current staffing level will assist us in becoming compliant with nationally recognized staffing standards as well as providing us the opportunity to improve the services we provide to our citizens. Equally as important, this increase in staffing will allow us to provide our firefighters with a greater level of safety as they operate on the emergency scene.”
LeCroy said he hopes to have the additional firefighters hired by early Summer.
“The approval of the SAFER grant will enhance the protection of our firefighters as well as our citizens,” Mayor D. J. Ory said.
